Pakistan Journal of Radiology (PJR)
Introduction of PJR
Editor in chief's note It gives me great pleasure to write this inaugural issue message to you as the Editor in Chief of the Pakistan Journal of Radiology.
Medical journals play a vital role in the practice of medicine today. They provide a forum for the presentation and dissemination of medical knowledge which may impact patient care. The volume and scope of medical literature in the West is overwhelming. However, much of this data is not relevant to the practice of medicine in Pakistan. The publication of local data is crucial to publicize locally relevant information that would guide the diagnosis and treatment of patients in Pakistan. Such a journal also provides an opportunity for Radiologists and particularly Radiology trainees in Pakistan to develop skills of critical thinking, literature review, and medical writing which are essential for a career in academia. Finally, foreign journals are not available to all Radiologists in Pakistan.
Previous efforts to regularly publish a Radiology journal in Pakistan have been only partially successful. However, under the dynamic leadership of the Editor, Dr. Zafar Sajjad, and his team, I am optimistic that the present effort will succeed in publishing a journal of highest standards and we will soon be able to have it indexed. We need the support of the Radiology community especially from those working in academic institutions by providing articles for this journal. I am encouraged by the financial assistance from the Radiology related companies which is essential for the success of this journal.
Finally I hope the members of the Radiology Society will benefit greatly from this journal and thank everybody involved with the journal.

Editor note At this time of social, economic and political turmoil in the country Pakistan Journal of Radiology is also undergoing a major change in its life. After being a nomad for the past twenty plus years, moving from city to city, province to province it has finally decided to settle down. Karachi is it newchosen home. Not only does it have a new home, this is accompanied by a new website and hasa new editorial team at the helm. It is early days and this is the first issue from Karachi. You will notice many new features which have been introduced to broaden the scope of the journal and make it more relevant to the issues facing Radiology in Pakistan today. Notably there are now dedicated sections for radiology trainees and technologists. These sections should help these under represented sections of the radiology community to have a voice and to highlight issues from their perspective. Other new additions are sections on management and digital technology. I feel that these are the need of the hour. Without good management structures and without embracing new technology not only “in the front of the house” but also in the “back of the house” we cannot hope to continue to play a role in the ever changing arena of healthcare.
Hopefully we will go on to new heights from here but for us to achieve this we will need help from all of you. It will be your contributions that will help the journal achieve its rightful place. The editorial team can only do so much. It is dependent on the submissions from all of you and if we do not take the owner ship of journal nobody else will. Pakistan in general is very far behind the community of nations in the discovery of new knowledge. Even when compared to the research output in the medical fields in Pakistan, Radiology lags far behind. Most of the research in radiology is being done by non radiologist clinicians. We are very protective of our professional turfs and fight hard to retain them. We should show the same dedication when it comes to the academic turf. I have always believed that radiologists can only hold their own if they are at least as if not more knowledgeable about the disease states under discussion than their clinical colleagues. This is also true for research.
We as professionals have to take the next step in our evolution. We have achieved a level of professional competency comparable to other countries (at least in the region) and have to strive to be comparable to them in research. We have to remember whoever discovers the knowledge controls it and also derives the benefits inherent in its discovery.
I look forward to your support .
